When I arrived in Michigan it was covered with snow, almost 2 feet deep. We had a beautiful white Christmas and then it rained... the snow melting away with steam coming off of everything, dreamy foggy steam. Looking outside now, only small clumps of brown snow.

I'm off to the big D! There probably won't be any new posts til 2009. That sounds strange already. But hopefully the weather doesn't keep me indoors and I'll have some new Detroit pics. Have a wonderful Holiday!

Holidays on Ice

Nothing like the first snow, rain, ice, more snow and a manhole explosion to keep it festive.

Here we go! Our first snowfall of the year. Looks like it's going to be a doozie - or so they are warning us - "GO BUY MILK, TP, it's going to be AWFUL!". Uhm... it's snow. I love it!

It's amazing how quickly things change in NYC. It seems like everything you know will be replaced. Everything. I get crazed at how much changes and I've only been here 10 years, imagine growing up here. Hopefully we won't lose the newsstands in the subway too. The mess above was the newstand in Union Square... no more. Not sure if they will replace it with one of the new - ultra streamlined oh to perfect - newstands or not, but I am missing the old.

Standing and waiting... waiting waiting waitng for the train - never seems to come when you need it. Thankfully there is usually some entertainment. Tonight's music was provided by Light & Hitch, a little hillbilly twang in the city. They had quite a crowd around them, hootin and hollering along. Thank you!

RePop is one of those stores that I feel the need to touch everything. You could spend hours looking in and around the furniture finding all the fun stuff - the top hats, hoof lamps and of course the dolls - doll heads, doll molds, doll arms and legs , all waiting for you to take them home, or in my case, photograph them.

The detour off Route 22, which of course led to the wrong turn, was to Hellertown. I knew nothing of Hellertown, nor why I was going there. I was just intrigued that all these signs kept popping up letting me know where it was and how far... but not why. So I went the 3 miles down the single road to see what the hell was Hellertown. Just a small town with a BIG yellow sign that screamed CAVE TURN LEFT. So I did. I drove right by the place before I realized it, turned around and still wasn't sure I was there. Only signs for a Gem Shop and Souvenirs. I had to use the restroom so I went in and turned into a sucker and took the tour. It was a cave. With a wedding alter in case you care to get married in the cold. Some bad lighting. And lot's of dumbed down commentary for the kids. Should of saved the $10. But check out that foliage with dinosaurs!!! oooh. love it.

Driving through Jersey on Route 22 wasn't all that interesting to photograph. I found it sad that so much of it looked just like everywhere else - Dunkin Donuts, 7-11s, pretty much strip mall hell. It wasn't until I was cruising along on I-78 that I spotted the above place, Bethlehem Graveyard, which isn't in, nor near Bethlehem, but somewhere between a bunch of small towns near Pattenburg. There isn't much information that I can find. Just a ruin of an old stone church that obviously was left years ago yet the small cemetery on the side is tended too. Flags in place. Looking closer, all three headstones are for the children of RJ & Alice Killgore. All died young, two in the same year. Time to start doing some research!

It's hard to keep up the motivation to shoot in this weather. I cannot jump on the bike and my feet will only get me so far. So last weekend I rented a car and drove down Old Route 22 to visit my brother. I was remembering a different road when I planned my route but it was still interesting. I was that driver you can't stand: break lights, coast...ooh, interesting, speed up - break lights... then between a cave and Quakertown I took a wrong turn. I love wrong turns but the sun was going down and I needed to get to Reading, time to just drive. I'll post a few more images this week, but this is where I started... good ol' Jersey.
