Larry

Yesterday was perfect for a December bike ride, can't say the same for today. The sun was out, no wind and we broke 40 degrees! Larry was all alone on the pier and he prefers it that way, "...the crazy summer fishermen hibernate, I get the place to myself". He's lived in Red Hook almost all his life but only eats the fish every few months, just something to do. He told me about some of the fish they used to catch, they weren't quite fish, covered with 'stuff'. The water is certainly cleaner now but he still tosses most back for another day.

Dinner... postponed.

This one was too small. After a good look-over, released back into the waters to hopefully be caught again next year. There is something about the bait board I love: the bloody mess of cut fish and knives... perhaps it's just the fall light, the fishermen think I'm just some crazy girl that likes to photograph the gross stuff. I don't mind photographing it but never quick to touch it. Yay Purell!

dreaming again...

as the winds kick up and the temperatures drop I woke up thinking about this wonderful trip. We were in Belize for Bonefish Grill to capture the art of capturing fish. Lobster caught on the reef with a single handmade spear. Beautiful waters. And... nets. I do not agree with the use of the nets, but these were small time fishermen - only taking in 2 buckets of fish at a time, throwing back the unwanted. Dreaming about warm waters... anyone for a trip?

Back to Red Hook

This fishing project has taken on a life of it's own. Now, wherever I go I notice the bikes with rods, the buckets on the handlebars, the eagerness to get to the water. I feel the same but for other reasons. The last few days we have had some wonderful weather but as the winter comes upon us it will be interesting to see how eager I still am. I'm told they fish all winter, wrapped up like bears against the chill. Back in the D they switch to ice fishing, doesn't really get cold enough for that here, although that sounds warmer then standing on a bone-chilling windy pier on the ocean.

the last catch...

Yesterday was the final day for the Fishing Derby with everyone out full force trying to catch just one more. One more even bigger then the 40" that was caught on the LIC piers. No such luck but it was a beautiful day with good people even with the sun setting too soon. A slide show of the day is here -> derby <- and more information over on Ben's site.

A ride to the ocean.

We finally had a day that resembled Fall and not Winter so off on the bike I went - Coney Island bound. It wasn't as quiet as I expected it to be. A few of the boardwalk bars and clam shacks were open and the fishing pier was full. No one was catching anything and they all had a theory... this guy. He had two buckets full of these small fish, speerim or whiting or ???. His english was zero or so he said, the comedic fishing crew on the bench watching him thought otherwise. He motioned with his hands that they were to eat, but that is a lot of teeny tiny fish, I'm assuming he's selling them to a store or restaurant. Which scares me. Just found this link from 2003, I'm guessing he knows more English then he's letting on... looking at those pics, Coney hasn't changed much in 6 years.

Don't be jealous..

There's a little event going on this month called The Brooklyn Fishing Derby - tonight was the start, all month you fish and enter your best catch for a chance to win. Now, I'm no fisher-girl but I do love a nice smoked fish. I'm going to try to get out there and photo a few of the folks but it's awfully chilly tonight, hope this isn't a sign of what is to come... Here's the link if you are interested.

A fishing story...

It started with 2 bikes, sunshine, some fishing poles and an apology.
Ended in laughter, burgers, friends and moonlight.
The only fish we saw was the bait, but I prefer my fish from cleaner waters anyways. -see the full day here-
