game on.

The sun popped out after the rain in the morning which took all the focus off of the project I was working on. Must go outside! Wandering through Brooklyn I found these men who were also happy the sun came out, Domino game on. One accused me of being bad luck but the others paid me no mind. "Nice camera, who you work for?" ha.

summer gone so soon.

Just came across this one from the fishing derby at the end of summer. Warm enough to take the coat off but still the coat in tow. I like winter. I love snow. But so far I'm holding on tight to the summer memories of warmer weather, sunsets and much longer days. I don't know what to do with myself in these short days with snow looming. I can walk, but where?

the last catch...

Yesterday was the final day for the Fishing Derby with everyone out full force trying to catch just one more. One more even bigger then the 40" that was caught on the LIC piers. No such luck but it was a beautiful day with good people even with the sun setting too soon. A slide show of the day is here -> derby <- and more information over on Ben's site.

Bring on the leaves!

When I was a kid I loved to lay in the field amongst the leaves. Pile em up. Jump on them. Hide and scare Mom & Dad. All of it! So when I saw these kids in the leaves it made my day. I left the house a little lost, unsure where to go or what to do. It's been since August without a job so filling the days is getting harder and harder, thankfully this is New York and there is always something, just need to walk that extra block and say hello. Next thing you know you have 40 kids around you, throwing leaves, laughing and putting a smile back on the face.

play ball.

About 8 years ago I happened upon a baseball game in Williamsburg of young Hasidic men. It was a first for me and if you saw them play, a first for most of them. But it was amazing. The Hasidic community is seldom seen in the hipster side of Willyb and as an outsider, the Hasidic world seems very formal with no time for such things as baseball. So when I spotted them on the ball fields last night I had to stop. It was a friendly game between Williamsburg and Borough Park and other then the white shirts, hard to tell who was on what team. Their skills have certainly improved. As crazy as they thought I was photographing them, I think they liked it... well, some of them. -A slide show of more images here-

Giglio, 2009

Another day out and about in the sun! I woke up with the idea to nothing today and ended up filling the whole thing with fun. Biking, Giglio, Soul Summit and BBQ - I love summer. Almost every year I've made it to the Giglio Feast of Mount Carmel and am amazed every time - 112 men lifting a 4-ton, 65-foot tower with another 10-15 men on top - spinning, swaying, smiling in the heat of July.

Uaglio! (Boys!)
Aizati i spalli (Lift your shoulders)
Acconge i cosce (Tighten your legs)
Aggiet! (Throw it!)

I love seeing the familiar faces as the years go by, this year I found myself standing next to Danny Aiello. Soon as I realized it was him, all I thought about was Moonstuck (I love that movie!). He looks much younger then IMDB says he is! If you've never gone to the Feast, make a point to go next year. Click here for more Feast pics

debauchery day 2

Another day of fun out with friends - this time for the Kentucky Derby over at the Ale House - dresses, derby hats and of course, mint juleps all around. I took a lot of images, too many to post. to flickr they go. click away to take in the day. After the race I stepped next door to talk with the neighbor. She was a trip. So many in the old hood just complain, she just laughed. What a wonderful spirit!

I told you it's always an adventure! Last night while out with friends, we met two original Williamsburg folk who just happen to make their own wine - right here in Brooklyn. So of course I asked... and away we went. In a small yard house with a lower cellar, the grapes come to life. We cracked a jug and shared stories of Brooklyn. Smile. thank you!

Livin' in the City

Inside of La Marqueta you mostly find food but in the far corner there are two small barber shops and a beauty salon. There is something beautiful about barber shops, especially these small independent spaces that have held on over the years. Daniel Reyes, who is in the first 2 photographs, has been in his space for 27 years and in the neighborhood for over 45.

(I just heard that they won a new 5 year lease so La Marqueta will live on!)

Another Saturday on the bike getting lost in the city. No matter what wrong turn you take you will always discover a part you shouldn't miss. Today I found myself on Graham Avenue and Moore Street, a latin quarter on the edge of Williamsburg. I passed by the "live pollo" deciding to go into La Marqueta first. Images from inside will come soon, but first, the pollo.

"excuse me ma'am... you can't be here"

An incredible fog is over the city right now. There is something about fog that I just have to get out there and shoot. Very seldom will you find me up and moving at 7am but fog changes fast. I tried to get near where I took this photo but the waterfront in Williamsburg is locked down. When I took that photograph in 1999, the waterfront was a decrepit mess full of crumbling buildings and crack viles, but it was wonderful. Anyone could get there to take in the view. Now, with the construction of 7 hi rise buildings, the waterfront is no longer ours - besides the small park - but that was locked up at 7am.
